A Tour of Indianapolis Motor Speedway

During a brief business trip to Indianapolis I was fortunate enough to take a quick tour of one of the most historic race tracks in the world.

Built in the spring of 1909 the first 500 mile race was held in 1911. With exceptions of 1917-1918 and 1942-45, when activity was suspended due to America's involvement with the two World Wars, the Indianapolis 500 has been held every year since.

The track is located less than 6 miles northwest of the center of the City of Indianapolis in a neighborhood which since 1926 has officially been the City of Speedway.

The pictures do not do justice to the speedway. As a last minute trip I had to purchase a disposable camera to take these memories back home.


Ray Harrown wins the first 500 aided by what is believed to have bee the very first rear view mirror ever used in an automobile.	A picture looking back as we drive on the back straight at 35mph!	The only brick patch left from the original track. I made the tour bust stop just to take this photo and touch the bricks.	On the tour bus at a super 35mph speed I think the driver was fed up with me asking to stop to take photos.

This is the museum that keeps all the history on the speedway intact.	The grad tower, looking at it from inside the track send chills thru you spine.	The trophy that just about any race car driver would love to hold.	A n amazing site looking away from the main straight into turn 1
